Cavity QED with Single Atoms and Photons

چکیده
Recent experimental advances in the field of cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) have opened new possibilities for control of atom-photon interactions. A laser with “one and the same atom” demonstrates the theory of laser operation pressed to its conceptual limit [1]. The generation of single photons on demand and the realization of cavity QED with well defined atomic numbers N = 0,1,2, ... both represent important steps toward realizing diverse protocols in quantum information science [2, 3]. Coherent manipulation of the atomic state via Raman transitions provides a new tool in cavity QED for in situ monitoring and control of the atom-cavity system. All of these achievements share a common point of departure: the regime of strong coupling. It is thus interesting to consider briefly the history of the strong coupling criterion in cavity QED and to trace out the path that research has taken in the pursuit of this goal.

A Multimode Dial for Interatomic Interactions
I nteractions mediated by photons are ubiquitous in physical systems. For instance, the van der Waals interaction between atoms in free space—variants of which play a fundamental role in many physical, chemical, and biological processes—is mediated by photons of the electromagnetic vacuum between the atoms. Interestingly, while this interaction is weak and decays with interatomic separation whe...
متن کاملStrong Interactions of Single Atoms and Photons in Cavity QED
An important development in modern physics is the emerging capability for investigations of dynamical processes for open quantum systems in a regime of strong coupling for which individual quanta play a decisive role. Of particular signiÐcance in this context is research in cavity quantum electrodynamics which explores quantum dynamical processes for individual atoms strongly coupled to the ele...

We review recent experimental advances in the field of efficient coupling of single atoms and light in free space. Furthermore, a comparison of efficient free space coupling and strong coupling in cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) is given. Free space coupling does not allow for observing oscillatory exchange between the light field and the atom which is the characteristic feature of strong ...
متن کاملReal-Time Cavity QED with Single Atoms
The combination of cold atoms and large coherent coupling enables investigations in a new regime in cavity QED with single-atom trajectories monitored in real time with high signal-to-noise ratio. The underlying “vacuum-Rabi” splitting is clearly reflected in the frequency dependence of atomic transit signals recorded atom by atom, with evidence for mechanical light forces for intracavity photo...
متن کاملNonclassical Intensity Correlations in Cavity QED
We report nonclassical correlations in the light transmitted by a collection of two-level atoms strongly coupled to a single mode of the electromagnetic field of a driven optical cavity. This cavity QED system can produce bunched light that violates the Schwarz inequality due to the state preparation of the system from the detection of a photon. The correlation function shows oscillations at a ...
